DISTORTED BODY 2019-2020
Inspired by the human anatomy and psychoanalytic theory, Minju Kim explores desire as a main subject matter alongside of the concept of life and death.
The dismemberment of the body in contemporary society is the result of modern humans who are living in such oppression, fettered both physically and psychologically, submerged in mortality, forever lost in limbo.
MECHANICAL FLESH 2018-2020
Mechanical Flesh is a series of paintings on canvas. Inspired by anatomy charts, ultrasound pictures and cell images, Minju Kim creates a unique landscape of body where life and death runs in a continuous loop.
I SAW THIS COMING 2019
'I Saw this Coming' is a series of painting on wooden board. The series begun when I found out about the cancer and after the several operations. It is based on what I experienced physically and mentally. The artwork is created with a perspective of implying the physical and mental pain before or after the surgery, some details imply as if the blood comes out from the wound and rotating around. This is also inspired by ultrasound pictures, cell images, the experiences of biopsy and medical examinations.
The title is related to obvious fear that people have, which usually never happens; however my fear has been actualised rather often in my life, hence I wanted to imply these expectations of fear of mine in a rather sarcastic way and it is regarded as an object of despair.
